So many of us honor our dad’s on Father’s Day with a flashy tie or a new set of barbecue tools. This year I wanted to do something a little different and honor my father in law with a story – the story of Martin & Martin Insurance!  Our family has been in the insurance business for almost 80 years and has seen four generations and seven total family members assist our community to insure what they love!

Along the way we have tried to hold onto the way of doing business that Grandpa Dan Martin established when he began offering life insurance to his family and neighbors. This would have been in 1940 when he would walk to the neighbors and collect the premiums each week. He operated from his home and hung a sign up on the porch (the sign hangs in our conference room now!). Back then time was more plentiful, and things were simpler, Dan would enjoy being sociable and chewing the fat with his neighbors.  He enjoyed protecting his neighbors and believed in making sure if the unthinkable happened the families would be ok financially if they had life insurance. In 1958 Dan purchased the building on Nevada Street and was joined by his son Jack Martin and then later his daughter Charlotte joined the agency. It was a family affair.

The office grew again in 1983 when I joined my sister in law Jill in the business shortly after the birth of my first son Jake.  Starting in the office as a file clerk, I can proudly share that I have done every single job in the office and will not ask my employees to do anything that I have not.  After 25 years in the industry and facing an illness at home Jill retired in 2008 and I decided to forge on alone.  Changes in the industry were challenging but I like to think that Grandpa Dan would approve of my resolve to keep the same neighborly values that he set the tone for. 

Life is too short to beat around the bush; I tell it like it is even if the news is not pleasant. I think being a straight shooter is important and builds the integrity needed to provide the guidance needed for selling a promise. Being available via email, text and social media is today’s version of stopping by and chewing the fat, just in a newer format. I write many family and friends and I like to think that the longtime clients become friends as well. The relationships that are developed keeps me moving forward. When claims or accidents happen, I want to be there for my friends. I appreciate that they place their trust in Martin & Martin and the entire agency family has the same in mind when it comes to putting them first.

This Father’s Day as I look back at the foundations of the business that were set many decades ago by Grandpa Dan, I can honestly say that those are the same foundations Martin & Martin lives by today.  We educate, secure and service our clients with Integrity – just like Grandpa Dan used to do!
