Another Northwest Ohio winter in the books and boy was it a doozy!  Polar Vortex is now a part of our Toledo vocabulary and near weekly snow storms has us ready to toss the shovel and the rock salt in the back of the garage.  Once the temperatures turn upwards and the sun starts shining it is time to get out and inspect what damage the brutal winter has taken on your home.  Kevin Webb, of David R. Webb Builders, is a local insurance restoration contractor and we recently spoke to him to get some tips on prevention and maintenance for your home.

Springtime typically ushers in the possibility of wind damage and flooding issues, but there are some key things you can do to minimize problems.  First thing Webb states is to pay attention to the basic maintenance of your home in order to increase its longevity.  Starting at the top, a home’s roof is usually the catalyst for many insurance claims so take some time to inspect your shingles and the overall condition of your roof.  There is a possibility that claims can be denied if the roof was in bad shape to begin with.  Trees and landscaping around your property are also important to maintain.  Check the grade that surrounds your foundation, make sure the topsoil or mulch is higher than your yard for natural water flow away from your home.  Falling limbs and trees from wind can be prevented when you consult with a specialist to see if pruning or removal is necessary.

Your home’s basement is extremely susceptible this time of year as well.  According to Webb, sump pumps are your first line of defense – make sure that they are running properly and think about replacing it every 3-4 years.  The money spent on a new sump pump can save thousands on deductibles and emergency renovations.  Pay special attention to your basement where the walls and floor meet, if you have water seepage this may indicate a problem with the footer tile.  An inspection and possible clean- out of the footer tile may be warranted.

The hard work you put in now on maintaining your home will pay off in the long run with increased property value and hopefully minimal claims to your insurance.  Maintenance can also mean possible discounts so don’t forget to let us know if you have replaced your roof or upgraded anywhere in your home.  We like finding you the best discounts and ensuring that you are properly covered.  Often, your home is your greatest investment and we at Martin and Martin want to give you the tools to protect your investment!
